Employers invited to share views on health and work

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are encouraging businesses to participate in an important survey as part of the Keep Britain Working review.

What is the Keep Britain Working review?

The Keep Britain Working review, also known as the Charlie Mayfield Review, is an independent review investigating health-related economic inactivity. Led by Sir Charlie Mayfield, the review aims to explore how government can better support employers to recruit and retain people with health conditions and disabilities, promote healthy workplaces, and support people to stay in or return to work following periods of sickness absence.

Recent developments

Sir Charlie published his early findings on 20 March 2025, outlining key areas for further exploration. These findings are now available on the GOV.UK website.

How businesses can contribute

A survey has been launched to gather evidence and insights from employers across the UK. This survey will be the primary source of evidence considered in the review and will directly influence Sir Charlie’s recommendations.

The survey specifically seeks insights on workplace interventions that help employers to:

  1. Prevent health issues from developing or worsening at work
  2. Retain employees with health conditions and disabled employees who face barriers to work
  3. Rehabilitate employees returning from sickness absence

Who should respond?

The review team is particularly keen to increase business input, with a focus on:

  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Businesses from a wide range of sectors
  • Organisations from various locations across the UK

Other stakeholders, including organisations working with employers and individuals with relevant lived experience, are also encouraged to participate.

How to take part

The survey is open until midnight on Friday 30 May 2025 and can be accessed via Keep Britain Working Survey

What happens next?

The insights gathered will inform Sir Charlie’s recommendations in the final report, which is expected to be published in autumn 2025. The aim is to develop recommendations that are effective, specific and proportionate to help address health-related economic inactivity in the UK.
