Small firms urged to invest in digital resilience

Published: November 10th, 2025

Small and medium sized businesses are being encouraged to take advantage of the huge developments in AI to improve their digital resilience and save time and money.

The British Business Bank highlights how recent advances in AI mean it is now accessible to businesses of every size – and can play an essential part in business resilience.

Areas where AI can prove particularly successful for SMEs include freeing up staff from repetitive tasks, improving decision making through better data analysis and enhancing customer communications.

The British Business Bank sets out a range of areas where AI can make an immediate difference:

  • Routine tasks such as diary management, email sorting and data entry can be automated, giving business owners more time to focus on strategy
  • Customer service can be strengthened through chatbots that handle common queries, leaving staff to deal with more complex issues
  • Recruitment and HR processes can be streamlined, from writing job adverts to analysing CVs and automating onboarding
  • Data analysis tools can help firms better understand customer behaviour, predict sales trends and personalise services

But the bank also stresses that adopting new technology is not without challenges. Businesses need to be mindful of the quality of their data, the costs of implementation and the importance of protecting customer information.

In a new article, the bank highlights some of the AI tools available which can help businesses be more successful.

They include well-known examples such as ChatGPT but also tools for transcribing calls, diary management, content creation, customer communications and HR and recruitment.

The bank has also produced a comprehensive guide to building business resilience which is free to download from https://www.british-business-bank.co.uk/about/research-and-publications/guide-to-building-business-resilience
